Grateful.  Disgusted.  Proud.  Embarrassed.  The Yale Alumni Magazines recent cover story Why They Call Yale The Gay Ivy sparked a furor among its readers, igniting a larger controversy about homophobia, tradition and the generational divide in our country today.  Out of this vehement and diverse alumni response was born The Gay Ivy, a musical theater collage featuring work by more than a dozen writers and composers: roommates reminisce about their parallel yet isolated lives fifty years ago; two women wake up in each others arms; one of the first Africa-American alumnae confesses her own struggle to embrace her sons lifestyle; a legacy-student confronts his grandfathers hatred and his own conflicted sexual identity.

After reading "Why They Call Yale the Gay Ivy," I've decided to come out of the closet. To the entire world I now declare myself a flaming homophobe.  - Class of 60, Letter to the Editor

Even in a community of liberal elites, how could alumni write such hateful things with a sense of impunity?  Why did many feel that they had the right to condemn homosexuality and claim ownership of Yale?  As gayness, gay characters and gay celebrities have become more accepted and even celebrated, casual homophobia still pervades our society.  While the fight for marriage equality is gaining ground and President Obama has finally acted to repeal Dont Ask Dont Tell, millions of Americans still believe that homosexuality is wrong and shameful.  The Gay Ivyis a portrait of this pivotal moment in our culture. By giving voice to disparate perspectives on the Alumni Magazines controversial article, it explores the Yale community as a microcosm of our country today.
