If only I could have been there to help John. He was a leader I respected, and now his family faces the hardest of times this holiday. Candidly, I knew I might be able to help him, but my own needs for success and reward consumed me. I let it slip.
Can you relate to my moment of regret? I could have been there for someone but wasn't. For us spiritually attentive ANE leaders these moments are a signal to examine our balance. We lead so that better things come about through us rather than deliver better things for us. John's situation is a stark reminder of how easily we can get this the wrong way round.
Scan your mental address book this holiday week. Are there any places where your own inaction might lead to regret? Don't end up saying, "If only I had been there." Do the better thing -- Right now -- In the right spirit.
Happy holidays!
Stephen
