What do we really mean when we say we want to be calmer leaders? It's so much easier to describe the opposite!
To me, staying calm is having my spiritual connection so firm that my attitude toward everything and everyone says that I am "in exactly the right place." It's a place where my confidence is great as I guide myself and others. I feel authentic and influential. Being there for people is easy. There's never an issue with finding the best path forward.
Terry Herring, ANE's Vice Chairman, calls it being a leader who has his "core squared-up." And helping you "square-up" your core through workplace devotion and connecting with people is what ANE's leadership programs are all about.
This week, protect your calm. When your spirit is down, revive yourself through your momentary reflections and calls. Try not to transmit transient negative feelings to colleagues. Avoid conversations like gossip and rumors. Dig out your 2011 goals and get grounded on priorities for the rest of the year. Celebrate some successes. Focus on the strengths of your team members, not their shortcomings. Avoid people who diminish you wherever possible. Connect with one old friend you haven't spoken with yet this year.
