Resentment and anger really mess up organizations. It's destructive enough when individuals act this way, but when an entire team practices such fearful, negative thinking, the consequences can be dire. And who is accountable? In large part the leadership for not seeing the danger and, in many cases, tacitly ignoring it. (Think, Enron.)...
The danger is this: In an overly competitive environment, we place excessive value on the externalized results of our creative power and under value the importance of the creative power itself. It's this dimension of over-valuing the outer at the expense of the inner that builds a culture on shaky foundations.
What differentiates us as ANE leaders is that we focus on getting this balance the right way round. We intentionally place value on our essential core, our spiritual center, in certain belief that the downstream attitudes, behaviors and outcomes will be better.
This week, tune up your attitude antenna. Look out for these "terrible twins," anger and resentment - they are often well disguised. And please don't forget yourself. Whenever you sense them sapping spirit, take immediate action. Ask 1) What deeper worry is driving this? and 2) What can I do to resolve it? Then do it! It's action that builds a new equilibrium.
