Have you noticed how rapidly leaders who fall prey to greed and self interest are being exposed? Greed is an inordinate and insatiable desire for wealth, possessions, or power. Self-interest is an obsession with personal advantage over others. Do you have any? From the fraudulent expense claims of UK Members of Parliament to false reporting by Corporate CEOs, examples are all around us. Trust instantly destroyed.
In the workplace it's easy to let these desires get us caught up in political games. So how does an ANE Leader deal with colleagues who spend more time on politics than doing what is right for the organization, customers, and people?
One ANE leader suggested this practical advice on our survey of experiences and challenges: "I know I can get caught up in the politics of things. It wastes my time, zaps my energy, and takes my mind to a place that is not productive. People do this to take me out of the real game and onto their self-obsessed playing field. I'm learning to step out much quicker. I recommend tools such as a mantra, prayer, or a call to someone to get balanced. When I don't do one of these, I leave work feeling my day is only half done."
Another leader in UK emailed this advice. "I ask myself in situations: Who is really benefiting from what I'm doing here? If it's me, I ask Spirit to guide me away from there. Simply getting out feels so good."
What works for you? Please leave your experiences, ideas, and issues on our anonymous survey. Many thanks to this week's contributors.
