"My work day is a whirlwind of texts, tweets and emails which I get caught up in," said Don. "My time doesn't feel like it's my own. I start okay but I get stacked up and backed up. Things run out of control from there."
"Hooke's Law," I replied.
"As in elasticity?"
"Yes. Your bungee cord of coping stretches past its safe limit and loses its bounciness."
"How do I strengthen it for the future?"
"Not after it stretches too far but before! See the bungee cord as anchored to your inner core, your spiritual center. Whenever you strengthen this connection your improved coping ability takes you further."
"Practically, what do I do?"
"I call these Engagers; they bring your inner strength to things. Many people like to start each day and events throughout the day with a quiet prayer or meditation. I like to keep a journal. Others like to call someone special, or read. We go a little slower and use our unique Engagers. We can then manage our priorities and avoid being sucked into the whirlwind. We bounce a lot further."
"What practice will work for me?"
"Any one you will do, Don...."
