Sales growth, improved efficiency, better products, more profit - these are all types of business improvement. And it's the leader's job to bring these new things into existence through the people they lead, right? Leaders have to tap into the powerful creative capacity of each person and get these improvements happening.
So don't say that any colleague or anyone you lead is not good enough. It's like killing the golden goose before the egg is even conceived, let alone laid.
It's all to do with a leadership principle called the Spiritual Multiplier Effect. The qualities at the spiritual core of the leader are multiplied powerfully throughout the organization. When the leader values the amazing spiritual connection at his or her inner core, then he or she respects the same in others, and those positive qualities start filling the organization. For example, greater faith within the leader becomes greater trust flowing throughout the organization.
But the effect works in the negative direction too. When a leader concludes that someone is not good enough, they really have a crisis of inner spiritual connectivity. Negativity starts flowing out. In a business setting, the creative process stops dead and goes into reverse. Colleagues sense that the positive qualities at their inner core, like loyalty and determination, are no longer valued. They realize that their efforts to help the organization can be halted. It can be heartbreaking. And, at times, people's emotional response can be destructive. All from saying "They're not good enough."
It's true that people may not be as knowledgeable, experienced, or as quick-witted as you would like. But please understand that when you decide at your inner core that they are simply not good enough, you initiate your own future failure.
You can test this with our Spiritual Connectivity Scale. Think of a few colleagues you work with and rate them on the scale.
0: I don't want to work with you, it feels like we are a misfit.
1: I need you to show I'm in control of you most of the time.
2: I'm learning to trust and let you be free in our relationship.
3: I want you to be free and look for ways to try and encourage you.
4: I can let you be free but my trust is sometimes qualified.
5: I WANT to give your inner core more freedom. It's my job!
Then, for each person, ask yourself: How productive has my connection with him or her been? Is there a correlation between your score and productivity?
What can you do when the pressure to succeed gets so damaging? Remember, the spiritually engaged leader fully owns his or her reactions to people, and willingly makes spiritual core adjustment.
Gratitude, forgiveness, encouragement, compassion, ….. any of these on your to-do list today?
