Happy Hanukah, Merry Christmas, Happy Kwanza, and Happy New Year to all of you, your families, and your organizations. May you enjoy the celebration of the Season, reflect on the year, and look forward, with eager anticipation, to an exceptional 2015.

Earlier this week I spoke to a founding CEO about the inception of the business. He shared that the business was created to bring a positive impact on a large metropolitan city. The belief was that in creating that influence effectively, the result will be a positive impact and a successful business. The ambition was to be delivered in a humble and team-focused manner, without an identified figure head.

Jesus’ birth in a manager was humble, yet the Star of David and the wise men coming to visit did not exactly maintain secrecy. By most accounts, he remained out of the spotlight until the last few years of his life when extensive ministry, leadership, and education were delivered to the people. In the most publicly present final years, he intentionally moved in and out of the public eye by avoiding identification of who he was, promotion of the disciples, and then strong identification as The Son of God.

As you develop your leadership, do you make it about the team or yourself? Many successful organizations make it about the team, others about the charismatic leader, and others remain unclear. The CEO I mentioned, made it about the team which allowed significant growth but may ultimately lack the identification of a leader for both the workforce and customers to really connect with regularly. Jesus frequently shared a message about God’s presence in others but over 2000 years later, he is strongly identified as THE Leader for so many.

When you lead, just as when you are lead---remain mindful that your humility or identified public self has a significant impact to those you touch. If you choose to benefit from the spotlight, you may be exposed. If you sit in the darkness, you will not be found.
