Oops, I deleted the wrong file/folder

Have you had one of those moments, just after you press the OK button on the "Are you sure you want to delete" dialog where you realize "No, I don't want to delete 'My Big Presentation 2008' I wanted to delete 'My Big Presentation 2007.ppt'?" This usually happens after spending two days getting that presentation ready for the big meeting, which is tomorrow morning.

Well, we can't bring the file back exactly as it was when you deleted it, but you can almost immediately get a recent version back and start making those last minute changes again. Twice a day - at 7am and noon - a snapshot is made of the files on our hard disk. You can access those previous versions through the Windows Explorer. When you are looking at a folder, in the upper left is a list of things you can do and one is View Previous Versions.

To see previous versions of the file you deleted, make sure no files are selected in the fodler view and click that item. The past versions of the folder that are saved will be displayed.

You can select one and click the View button to see the folder as it was at that point in time and then copy that version of the file into your folder.

Only a limited number of versions are stored in this way and only for a limited time. So this does not allow you to go back indefinitely. You may still need to contact us about a backup version if you don't find the version you want here, but if you're looking for yesterday's copy, you should be able ...

Google Message Filtering and StartLogic

One of our consulting clients has a huge problem with spam (mostly because their previous website displayed their email addresses for all to see in plain text which made life easy for email harvesters). The other problem is that some of their email addresses are very common and thus also targeted by spammers. But, to some degree, our client doesn't care why they're getting all that spam, just that they are. And it's a lot. After struggling with the tools the web host they are using provided, I decided to look at some additional tools and Google's Message Filtering came to my attention. If you are only interested in inbound filtering (which we are) you can get it for just $3/account/year. Since our client is highly price sensitive and has a large number of email accounts (they are a volunteer organization and the email addresses can stay the same when the volunteers change) this seems like a great deal.

It's powered by Postini, so the back end looks good. But, I like to try these things out before rolling them out to customers. So, I decided I'd sign up my business domain for the service. I get a little bit of spam, generally it's caught by the filters in Outlook or on my server. I was using StartLogic, which I'd been signed up with for about five years. To make a long story short, after much gnashing of teeth and trying different things, it turns out that StartLogic's mail servers can't handle the Google Message Filtering service. I believe it has to do with the way the MX records are described and how StartLogic figures out which domain the mail belongs to, but I'm not sure.

So, I decided ...

Xobni for Outlook is awesome except it doesn't work.

Xobni which is inbox spelled backwards is an absolutely terrific plug in for Microsoft Outlook. It indexes all of your e-mail and all of your contacts and relates all e-mails to individual contacts with other e-mails to those contacts as well as other people who are copied on to those e-mails. It provides analysis of number of e-mails sent to.

It has been endorsed by no less than Bill Gates himself, who claims that it's a wonderful tool. Any time you use it, it is obvious that it has terrific analysis, provides great insight, and boy does it have a beautiful website.

There is in fact only one problem: it doesn't work, which is always an interesting thing with technology, because the fact is The metadata that Xobni collects provides an incredibly rich view of related conversations and related people and the fast indexing is faster than built-in search in Outlook, in finding specific people for contact information or other information about conversations with people.

So how can it then not work when it works? Well if you have more than one inbox open in your Outlook profile, Xobni reduces the responsiveness of outlook to a crawl. Adding 15 seconds to every click, between an email, or to the calendar or between contacts means that it literally takes half a minute to go through two emails. This means that without typing a single word you can only read 2 emails a minute ...

The New York City Science and Engineering Fair for NYC High School students is, for the first year, sponsored by the City University of New York under the auspices of the CUNY College Now Program (which I work for).

The Science Fair is looking for judges in fourteen areas, including social and behavioral sciences. Judges can be practicing scientists, doctoral students or other professionals in their fields in the New York City area (unfortunately the program cannot provide accommodations or funding for people coming from outside the area).

It's an excellent volunteer opportunity and a chance to meet talented students from throughout New York City and become involved in fostering and promoting science education.

You can find more information on qualifications for judges as well as the fair in general on the website:

SAN FRANCISCO - Last year was the year of big games, big console sales and big, big revenues.

This year, its all about community. Or, at least, thats what Microsoft Vice President John Schappert wants you to think.

In his keynote Wednesday at the Game Developer Conference, Schappert didn't reveal an acquisition, a streamlined Xbox 360 lineup or a partnership with Netflix. He announced an eBay-meets-YouTube service for Xbox Live. Games created by gamers, playable by Xbox Live members.

Oh, and Gears of War 2.

There werent any huge announcements, but in the context of the audience, it was a positive message, says Colin Sebastian, an analyst with Lazard Capital Markets. Microsoft continues to provide support to game developers, and then, utilizing the Xbox Live Community, making developing and distribution of games more accessible.

(Msnbc.com is a Microsoft-NBC Universal joint venture.)

Microsoft released its game-making toolset, XNA Game Studio, about a year ago. Its a full-scale development environment, tailored for consumers. So if youre a game enthusiast with some programming chops, you can make a game. And Microsoft says its seen 800,000 downloads of the tool since its launch.

But unless youve got a PR firm on retainer or a well-trafficked Web site, you have no way to share your creation with a wider audience. Until Xbox Live Community, which Microsoft hopes will democratize game development and game distribution.

The time has come for the games industry to open its doors to all game creators, enabling anyone to share their creations with the world, said Schappert. Our goal ...

KING CORN, a feature documentary by three Yale College alums, premiered at Cinema Village in New York City on October 12th and is now playing in select cities around the country.

KING CORN is a feature documentary about two friends, one acre of corn, and the subsidized crop that drives our fast-food nation. In the film, Ian Cheney ('02 and MEM '03) and Curt Ellis ('02) move to the heartland to learn where their food comes from. With the help of friendly neighbors, genetically modified seeds, and powerful herbicides, they plant and grow a bumper crop of America’s most-productive, most-subsidized grain on one acre of Iowa soil. But when they try to follow their pile of corn into the food system, what they find raises troubling questions about how we eat—and how we farm.
