People become numbed by the pace of change. The leader's work isn't just about vision and strategy. We also have to help people discover a deeper reality to working, one that restores the wonderful feeling that all the senses are engaged again.
"We serve patients' needs at a crucial time in their lives," said Diane, CEO of a hospital products company. "We are not here simply to sell products. Expressing this greater purpose, in a way that compels people throughout the organization, is my responsibility. When I do town hall meetings, I try to get everyone to connect personally to this idea. I call it our Spiritual Strategy. It connects us all at our inner cores.
"I encourage Purpose Meetings as a management practice. Every person in the company has the chance to talk about what the company's greater purpose means to them at an individual and team level. It's their choice to participate, but as a way of clearing away the numbness and rediscovering one's deeper motivation, it's fantastic. How easily we lose sight of what our heart wants to know: our working lives really do have meaning."
Numbed or inspired? Which will you be this week?
