As I was merrily wishing everyone sustained performance AND joy at work in 2013, I lost it with VP Joanne.
"Ugh! Please don't say that again," I said. "You're aggravating me."
"What! I can't ask everyone here why my work-life balance stinks?" she replied.
"Please don't. There's nothing like it for signaling your leadership inability."
"My inability?"
"Yes. You're not out of control. But when you say things like that you give everyone here permission to be. Plus you give them all a reason not to follow you. Who wants to be led out of balance? There are far better things to say.
"People take your words and connect them to their inner core, Joanne. Why? Because, at the depths of their inner core they want to resonate with the good in you that builds performance and happiness in them. Isn't that what you want? To get more of your good into the business through them? Telling them you can't find balance surely hinders that process."
What could Joanne really say? For the next six Mondays, as we prepare for our Membership drive and 2013 Program, my "Stop Saying It" messages will include a link showing some of our practical suggestions. Take a look here. Can you add more? Let us know your ideas.
