As a leader, cleansing your spiritual inner core at the beginning of interactions vastly increases the chances of a great outcome.
Imagine you are on your way to your team meeting and someone corners you in the hallway to criticize you and your team. After you part, your mind swirls with negative mental chitchat - things like "I should have, I ought to, they mustn't, they can't," and so on. As you go into your meeting, everybody turns to you for the usual uplifting kick off. Instead, your chitchat takes over and you unload your frustrations, cascading negativity into everyone's sensitive inner core.
It gets worse. You decide to stop the normal agenda and begin a loud finger-pointing diagnosis of the problem you just heard in the hallway. Your team goes quiet. They start looking down. The iPhones are out. Chitchat transfer is underway. Now their negative thoughts are toward you. Performance just left the room.
Breaking the hold of habitual mental chitchat in the fast-paced stressful world is what A New Equilibrium is all about. We are all far more likely to let fear, arrogance, anger or intolerance take us in the wrong direction these days. Since the problem is spiritual, the best solution is spiritual too. Many people use affirmations and prayer (like our prayer.) Others take a break, meditate for a few moments, or go for a short walk outdoors. Like other management tools, these inner core management tools form part of each person's unique leadership toolkit.
This week, deliberately work to manifest the balanced inner core you expect of others.
