Backup and Blackberry Desktop Manager

If you’ve been using your Blackberry for a while, it’s probably populated with some information that you’d like to keep – your calendar entries, contacts, etc.

If this information is already in Outlook (or somewhere else on your PC, in some type of format that can be imported into Outlook), you don’t have anything to worry about – once you activate, everything that’s contained within your Suremail™ mailbox (in the mail folders, the main calendar folder, the main contacts folder along with any of its subfolders, the tasks folder, and the notes folder) will be synchronized with your device anyway.

What you do need to be concerned about it any information that resides strictly on the Blackberry, because before Enterprise Activation, you’ll need to erase all of the data that’s on the device.

Backup

To back up your handheld, you’ll need the Blackberry Desktop Manager software that came with the device (or you’ll need to download the appropriate version from http://na.blackberry.com/eng/support/downloads/). If you’re having difficulty with the software, please consult your Blackberry User’s Guide, or contact your cellular provider for support.

Blackberry Desktop Manager

The Blackberry Desktop Manager software is the second most common cause for Enterprise Activation failure.

Blackberry Enterprise Server replaces this desktop-based application, so it is no longer necessary.  Furthermore, if you have previously associated a Blackberry device with your mailbox using the Desktop Manager and it is running while you attempt a wireless activation, the activation will fail because the Desktop Manager will essentially hijack the messages that are intended for the device.

To uninstall the software on Windows XP:

Select “StartControl PanelAdd or Remove Programs”, select the Blackberry Desktop software, and click Remove.

To uninstall the software on Windows Vista:

Select “StartControl PanelPrograms and Features”, select the Blackberry Desktop software, and click Remove.
